i [smell] new york.

August 31

i’ve always been told that smell is the sense that is most closely tied to our memories.  one of my most distinct childhood memories was when my family lived in the west village when i was 5.  the smells of the subway, the italian ice from around the corner, and the damp bricks of our stoop.

this past saturday on the new york times site, jason logan mapped the smells tied to his days spent exploring the metropolis.  logan displays them in the form of a flash map and key, allowing the user to get a glimpse of what the neighborhoods might be like, without the choking scent of rumbling taxis and garbage on the street.
