what: biblioteca vasconcelos in mexico city by alberto kalach

why: libraries will not go extinct, they will adapt to an increasingly digital world in order to maintain their relevance as highly important public spaces

originally opened in may 2006, the library was forced to close for 19 months, to undergo renovations and reconstruction.  the “campus” includes the main building,  a cafeteria, bookshop, exhibition space, a 500-seat auditorium and a botanical garden, all open to the public. this complex provides well-designed spaces for the people of mexico city, and redefines what a library space should be like.
