i want to go to there.
what: kowloon walled city
where: chinese enclave within british hong kong
a politically autonomous place within the british ruled hong kong, the kowloon walled city was notorious as a slowly erected shantytown. the blocked buildings were constantly built upon, with light rarely reaching street levels, which had to be lit by flourescent lights. soon connections were made at higher levels, connecting the structures to provide extra circulation, it was said that the city was so dense you could walk across the rooftops without ever having to touch the ground.
there were two rules for construction: electricity had to be provided (an attempt to avoid fire), and buildings could be no more than fourteen stories high, (because of the nearby airport).
